Explain & Show :)

The total number of carbon chains that four carbon atoms form in an alkane is -:

a) 5
b) 4
c) 3
d) 2

hharasudhan539: Alkanes with unbranched carbon chains are simply named by the number of carbons in the chain. The first four members of the series (in terms of number of carbon atoms) are named as follows: CH4 = methane = one hydrogen-saturated carbon. C2H6 = ethane = two hydrogen-saturated carbons.
hharasudhan539: a)5

ANSWER:- 03

STEP-BY-STEP EXPLANATION

Total number of carbon is 4. Also the type of hydrocarbon is ALKANE.
So,
All the bond between the 4 carbon atoms will be single bond.

Also,

The general expression of ALKANES is as follows:-

c_nh_{(2n + 2)}

Now,
Molecular formula of 4 carbon atom alkane will be :-

c_4h_{10}

The carbon chains that 4 carbon atoms can form are as follows :-

1) Straight Carbon Chain :-

In this all the carbon atoms will be aligned collinear to each other and will have hydrogen atoms attached with them.

The name of this hydrocarbon will be :-

butane

Also,

It is popularly known as N - BUTANE

2) Branched Carbon chain :-

In this the longest carbon chain will be of 3 carbon atoms and the 4th carbon atom will be attached to the 2nd carbon atom forming a Branched chain.
The molecular formula will be same as Butane but the IUPAC name will change.

The name of this hydrocarbon will be :

2 \: methyl \: propane

Also,

It is popularly known as ISO-BUTANE

This is because it is an Isomer of the hydrocarbon BUTANE.

3) Ring Carbon chain:-

In this all the four carbon atoms are linked with each other forming a closed ring.

The molecular of this compound is also same as BUTANE. The name of this compound is

cyclobutane

For the structure of all of these chains please refer the attachments.
