Meaning of Enthalpy of combustion?

Enthalpy of combustion is the heat energy or the change in enthalpy that involves the combustion of 1 mole of a substance in excess of air(oxygen).

Combustion is an exothermic process i.e it releases heat and thus the enthalpy of combustion is negative ;

∆H = (- ve).

And in case the combustion is incomplete then the heat energy released doesn't represent enthalpy of combustion .

Example of enthalpy of combustion :

CH4(g)+2O2→CO2+2H2O

Here ∆H = -890.34kj/mol
