The British entered India as a trading company in 1608. They established their factories in Bombay, Madras and Calcutta. Knowing that India was full of natural resources, Britain wanted to colonize it.

(i) They established their army which fought against the princely states. Battles of Plassey are examples of it.

(ii) They steadily annexed princely states under the "Doctrine of Lapse" under which the states with no suitable heir according to British criteria.

(iii) Eventually they established direct rule after occupying most of India.

They British Raj came to an end when Indian politicians demanded independence from the British. They asked for two separate states, India and Pakistan. The last British viceroy of India, left the country after dividing India into two.
