According to me, the greatest contribution of Bankim……..

The persona of Sh. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee that most touched me was his contribution to the literary world. He was endowed with such writing skills that he was a poet,  a writer and also a journalist. The most important aspect of his writing was his contribution to our National song adopted from his song ‘Bande mataram’ from his famous novel ‘Anand Math’.

Bankim Chatterjee also known as Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay was born on June 27, 1838, in Kantalpara, Bengal in a Brahmin family. He was highly intelligent and a brilliant student both in school and college. Apart from his studies, he used to take interest in reading other books during leisure. He also took a lot of interest in studying Sanskrit. It helped him a lot in his literary work. When Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote books in Bengali, his Sanskrit knowledge added to his skills in writing and helped him a lot.

He did his graduation from Presidency College in Calcutta and finished it in 1857 against all odds when there was a revolt in full force against the rule of The East India Company. He was appointed Deputy Collector in the same year by the Governor of Calcutta. He was a dedicated worker in the government service for 32 years and retired in 1891.

His started his writing with verses but moved into wiring fictions later.  His first novel was written for a competition but he did not win it nor was the novel published. But his journey into novel writing started then and his first novel in Bengali ‘Durgeshnandini’ was published in 1865 which was followed by his first big hit ‘Kapalkundala’ which really established him as a writer.

Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay also wanted to bring about a cultural change in Calcutta and started the monthly magazine ‘Bangadarshan’ in 1872. His works were spontaneously and universally recognised, became very popular and have been translated in most Indian languages.
