Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the prominent festivals of India. It is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, which is celebrated with great pomp and show. It is primarily a Hindu festival that is celebrated on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad(August and September).
Although Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is the center of attraction, where this festival is celebrated with great joy for 11 days, whose glory is visible all over the country. The beautifully decorated pandals are prepared for Ganesh Puja at different places. The decorations of these pandals are pleasing to the heart.
On this day, people bring the idol of Ganesha to their homes and worship them for 10 days and immerse the idol of Ganesha on the 11th day. The worship of Lord Ganesha consists of red sandalwood, camphor, coconut, jaggery, and Modak because it is said that Lord Ganesha loves Modaks.
In these 11 days, devotees perform aarti(prayer) of Lord Ganesha in the morning and evening, perform bhajan-kirtan, perform havan, prepare various types of dishes and offer them to Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha blesses his devotees with wisdom, prosperity, and wealth. Lord Ganesha is said to be the protector of the good and the remover of obstacles.
After the completion of 10 days of worship, on the eleventh day Ganesh Visarjan(Immersion), a huge crowd of people happily bid farewell to the obstacles and it is said that as Ganesha puts all obstacles away and happiness is scattered all around.
