Advances in medical science, improved amenities and enhanced nutrition have helped increase the overall life expectancy of most populations across the world by a couple of decades. Current life expectancy in India, for example, is 66.08 years for men and 68.33 years for women, up by an incredible 50% on an average since the 1960s, according to the US Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA’s) The World Factbook, 2012. Contrary to popular belief, genetics plays a relatively minor role in longevity. Our lifestyle, in terms of food choices, exercise habits and positive outlook are more relevant.

How long we live depends on how we choose to live.

Longevity nutrition

Diets and lifestyles are known to control gene expression by influencing the epigenome, a
collective network of chemical switches within cells. Poor lifestyle choices like smoking and eating too much junk, or greasy, fatty and sweet foods could cause, for instance, the obesity genes to express themselves much more than those for longevity, and in turn affect overall lifespan.

Nutrients that bring about these changes in the epigenome, or epigenetic changes, do not and cannot alter DNA, the genetic molecule. Epigenetic nutrition is a biological response to environmental stressors like smoking, lack of exercise and overeating. While such responses to environmental stressors can be passed on and inherited, it is true that such responses can be negated by deleting the environmental stressor, and building a new life on healthy eating habits and exercise.

A longevity diet focuses on calorie-restriction with optimum nutrition to promote epigenetic changes. This approach minimizes the conditions associated with ageing, such as inflammation of joints, failing memory, poor eyesight, and accumulation of free radicals and toxins in the body.

The focus foods

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in flaxseeds, almonds, and oily fish, can suppress everything from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and osteoporosis to autoimmune disorders and inflammation, according to The Center for Genetics, Nutrition
and Health, US. They also lower blood triglyceride levels and hypertension. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids or polyunsaturated fatty acids, found in olive oil, soybean oil and other vegetable oils, reduces total cholesterol in the body. Extra virgin olive oil is especially efficient at increasing good cholesterol levels and also has compounds that are anti-inflammatory.

Vitamin E promotes longevity by detoxifying the liver, and as an antioxidant, it protects against oxidative stress. Ensure daily intake of foods rich in vitamin E, like sunflower seeds, walnuts, and almonds. Add a tablespoon or two of chopped nuts to breakfast cereals, yogurt and salads.

Vitamin C is indispensable to longevity. An adequate intake of this vitamin could increase life expectancy by six years, according to one study by Enstrom, et al, published in PubMed.gov. Vitamin C helps repair blood vessels and in turn reduces the risk of heart disease. Consuming 300mg a day of vitamin C reduces heart disease by 50% in men and 40% in women, according to a study on arteriosclerosis by David Hoffmann, published on DCNutrition.com, and 1,500mg intake of this vitamin every day prevents plaque build-up of cholesterol, according to a 2009 study by C.G. Willis, published on Natmedtalk.com. Vitamin C also increases collagen production and improves skin texture by preventing wrinkles and maintaining the integrity of cell walls of veins, arteries and capillaries.

Sources of vitamin C are fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, along with green pepper, leafy greens, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries, white potatoes, berries, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower.

Folic acid is crucial for longevity as it promotes vital functions of cell growth and division. Folic acid prevents cancer and the mental deterioration associated with ageing. A deficiency of folic acid is a risk factor for cognitive decline. Folic acid reduces levels of the amino acid homocysteine, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks. All leafy green vegetables and broccoli are good sources of folic acid.

Vitamin K promotes longevity in many ways. It controls blood clotting by synthesizing a liver protein that controls clotting. Vitamin K may decrease the incidence or severity of osteoporosis and slow bone loss as well as arterial calcification (hardening of the bones). In addition, vitamin K also prevents kidney calcification, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Leafy greens are the richest sources of vitamin K. One cup or 200g of spinach provides more than 10 times the recommended daily dietary intake (90mcg, according to the Food and Nutrition Board, US). Two tablespoons of parsley provide one-and-a-half times of that. Turnip greens, romaine lettuce, thyme, basil, broccoli and asparagus are other good sources.

Hey,

☆☆☆Essay on "Long Life is a Blessing"☆☆☆

Yes long life is blessing one. All the humans or not only humans also other living organisms like insects, birds, animals has a specific life span. It just varies from each other. In case of humans, This life span changes a lot. According to me, Living for long life is blessed but though it depends. It depends from person to person. Some things living for long life is a blessed one and some feels like long life is a cursing. Their physical and mental abilities determines this.

But first and best blessing in this world:- that is created as a human. Because human has 6 sense and enjoys their life as they wish. Same as this their long life is a blessed one too. It is blessing as we are exposed to see and experience all type of new tehnology and we use all type of service and we also see all type of change in world and no any worry about death.

For example, If "A" is living for 85 years and he/she lived happily with his/her family. Where if we take "B" lives only for 34 years as he/she had struggled a lot but though had many sorrows in life and that feelings made his/her death. So, there is a huge change of life span between them. The one who lived for long years is said to be blessed as he/she enjoys his/her life and makes his/her life a bit happy till the end.

So from this we can say that living for a long life span is with out mental and physical ability. For a long life span it is even said to be a record. Because in this generation we hardly see people living for long years. This is because of their physical and mental activities.

Hope my answer helps you :)

Shobana
