Sh. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was one of the finest poets and novelist of his time. He was the author of our National song, Vande Mataram which is still sung by one and all on national festivals and in schools, colleges and other such celebrations. 


Bankim Chatterjee was also known as Bankin Chandra Chatopadhyay. He was born on June 27, 1838, in Kantalpara, Bengal in a Brahmin family. He was a brilliant student both in school and college. Apart from his studies, he used to take interest in reading other books in leisure. He also took a lot of interest in studying Sanskrit. It helped him a lot in his literary work. When Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote books in Bengali, his Sanskrit knowledge added to his skills in writing and helped him a lot.


Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was studying in the Presidency college of Calcutta in 1857, when the revolt against the rule of East India Company was in full force but he managed to finish his degree course in 1859. He was appointed Deputy Collector in the same year by the Governor of Calcutta. He was a dedicated worker in the government service for 32 years and retired in 1891. 


Bankim Chatterjee married at an early age of 11 following some old custom to a girl of 5. He lost his wife at a tender age of 22 but remarried again and had three daughters.


He started writing verses first and began his carrier in literature and moved onto fiction after that. His first romance novel in Bengali was Durgeshnandini which was published in 1865. His other famous work followed after that. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s most famous novel Anand Math Had the song, ‘Bande Matharam’. This song was alter adopted as our National Song. 


Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was an excellent narrator of stories and a romance writer. He also wanted to evoke a cultural revival in Calcutta and brought out a magazine in 1872 called Bangadarshan.  He enjoyed spontaneous and universal popularity with his work and his novels have been translated in most of the other languages of India.
