Sh. Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay was one of the greatest Bengali poets, a novelist, an essayist and a journalist. He was also known as Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. He was born on June 27, 1838, in Kantalpara, Bengal, in a Brahmin family.
He was a very brilliant student in education both in school and college. Apart from his studies, he took a lot of interest in reading other books during leisure. He also took keen interest in studying Sanskrit. It helped him greatly in his literary work. When Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote books in Bengali, his Sanskrit knowledge added to his skills in writing and helped him a lot.
He was born into a family of government official working under British rule. He finished his graduation and later also obtained a law degree. He worked in government service for 32 years and his conduct due to his sense of self-respect often came into conflict with the authorities.
Bankim Chatterjee married at an early age of 11, to a girl of 5. He lost his wife at a tender age of 22 but remarried again and had three daughters.
His famous contribution to our national song ‘Vande Mataram’, taken from his book ‘Anandmath’ in which the song written as ‘Bande Mataram’, was a great inspiration for the freedom fighters of India.
Bankim Chatopadhyay was a religious reformer who believed that true reform could only be attained through internal reform of Hinduism, and struggled to lay the foundation for the spiritual revival of Bengal.
