Discrimination in the workplace is a current issue since it takes place here and there. An essay on prejudice in the workplace, first of all, should include what types of prejudice exists in this sphere. Workers may face a denial from an employer based on race, skin color, origin, age and, of course, gender. Usually, females are subjected to gender discrimination, and different ethnical minorities are subject to racial and color discrimination. The problem arose due to the conviction that some whites are more superior in mental capacity while blacks, for example, can handle primarily physical work. One more reason why applicants may fail when trying to get a good job is a poor knowledge of English or a heavy accent. Fortunately, a number of laws, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the U.S.A., have been issued to protect workers from unfair treatment in the workplace. When writing an essay on racism and discrimination, first of all, it is necessary to differentiate these two terms and give definitions to both. A student needs to indicate that discrimination is a much broader concept than racism. Discrimination deals with the unequal treatment of people belonging to the same race or ethnos. Another difficulty that can arise is that it may be hard to define what institutional racism is, how destructive it can be, and how it influences the whole population. Another important topic that has to be covered is discrimination prevention, especially at the workplace, or what has to be done when you become a victim of discrimination. Every employee should know his or her rights when applying for a job to avoid unfair treatment based on personal convictions of the hirer. It would be also a good idea to enumerate social programs that were designated to prevent prejudice and racial bias.

Race discrimination refers to treat someone differently due to their race which includes nationality, color, ethnicity or citizenship.  Though there have been The Equality Act 2010 which states that the person cannot be discriminated on the basis of his/her race. There are four types of racial discrimination. First is direct discrimination. It refers to the discrimination which involves discrimination in the same situation due to race. For instance, if a flat is not let to a person due to its race this is referred to as direct race discrimination. Second is indirect discrimination. In this type of race discrimination, the policy are in a way which put the people of the same racial group at a disadvantage. The third is harassment. It refers to make some feel offended, degraded or humiliated. For instance, an African at a workplace is called by different names which offend the worker.

Last is victimization. It refers to the type of race discrimination in which a person is ill-treated as he/she made a complaint regarding racial discrimination. Also, it involves the person who is supporting the person who has made the complaint.
