Climate is the buzzword everywhere, most importantly in the
international arena. Climate changes are looming threateningly on the entire
planet. Issues such as global warming, pollution, clean water and air, endangered
wildlife, conservation, sustainable development, etc. have caught all nations’
attention.
The developed and advanced nations have been taking the challenge
of climate change quite seriously. Climate is one of the core forces that will
shape foreign policies of all nations. India too will have to shape its foreign
policy keeping climate conservation in view.
According to the Paris Agreement signed in December
2015, India has been assigned to reduce its carbon emission intensity by 33 –
35% in the next 15 years. It means India
will have to produce power for its growth engine from non-fossil fuels.
India has to and will have to adopt climate conservation
policies and implement them successfully, if it is to avail benefits at the
international arena. The advanced countries will help India in achieving its
objectives such as entry into NSG, Permanent Membership in the Security Council,
and other benefits in the filed of technology transfer, more investment from foreign
countries, economic cooperation, etc. only if India abides by the new climate
policy.
India has shouldered the responsibility of contributing to
maintaining clean climate enthusiastically. Indian Government aims to invest $100 billion in producing clean
energy in next five years. India has also played an instrumental role in
establish International Solar Alliance , an organization of countries that will
work together to produce clean energy in future.
In conclusion it can be said that climate change will play a
very crucial role in India’s foreign policy. Indian Government and people are
already working proactively to adopt ways that are environment friendly. Much
has been done, much remains to be done, and together with the cooperation of
one another the much that remains to be done, will be done in time.
