Ethanoic acid or acetic acid ,is a weak acid but shows all properties of acids.

According to which if its added to carbonates it gives out an odourless and colourless gas carbondioxide with effervescence.

TESTS FOR CARBONDIOXIDE:-

◼When a burning extinguisher is brought in the contact with the gas ,the splinyer extinguishes.

◼When a moist blue litmus is brought in contact of gas it gets turned into faint red ,it shows that gas is weak acedic.

◼When the gas is passed over lime water it turns milky. On passing excess gas the lime water becomes colourless.

◼The gas has no effects on pottasium dichromate and potassium permangnate solutions.

EQUATIONS:--

 CH_3COOH + NaHCO_3 \longrightarrow CH_3COONa + H_2O + CO_2 \uparrow

For test of gas:-

 Ca(OH)_2 + CO_2 \longrightarrow CaCO_3

 CaCO_3+ CO_2 +H_2O\longrightarrow Ca(HCO)_3
