From 1773 to 1785, Lord Warren Hastings (1732 - 1818) was the Viceroy of India. He was the first Viceroy appointed by the British in India, during their rule.

Lord Hastings rose from the position of Resident of Bengal, to become the Governor-General of British India, through diplomacy and diligence. He established a good rapport with local rulers while at the same time he worked in line with his masters in Britain. This approach helped the British to expand and consolidate their rule in India. Lord Hastings policies and reforms had a profound effect on later administrative policies of the British in India.
