Unquestionably human
life is transient. Nothing is permanent except God. The poet, William
Shakespeare has highlighted this universal truth beautifully in the poem, The Seven
Ages. According to the poem man plays seven roles in his life from the time of
his birth to his death. First he is an infant; the infant grows into a school
going child; the school going child grows into a sighing lover; the lover is
transformed into a temperamental soldier; from the soldier he matures into a
wise justice; from justice into an old man; and then the last stage renders him
totally invalid. Finally man dies. Nothing ever stands still in life; there is
a constant flux of circumstances, time, age, and conditions. Neither happiness
stays permanently, nor unhappiness. So, men and women should not worry about
anything; they should rather focus on playing their roles in the best possible
manner. This is what the poet intends to convey to the readers through this
poem.
