Italy was divided into 7 states in the mid 18th-19th century.
 
The Sardinia - Piedmont area was the only region which was ruled by Italian Princely crown.
The central was dominated by Pope , it was called Papal state.
The north was under Austrian Habsburg Empire.
The south was ruled by Bourbon Kings of Spain.
There was a cry mostly by liberal nationalists for the unification of Italy.
