You can perform this experiment using a water soluble ink

Cut a strip of chromatography paper or filter paper in a rectangular shape

Put a drop of ink near the end of the paper, but not so close to the edge

Pour some water in a beaker

Support the chromatography paper vertically in the beaker of water such that the end with the ink in dipping into the water but not the ink

Leave the set-up undisturbed for some time

You will observe the water moving upwards and splitting the ink, separating it into its components.
