The almighty has set the sex ratio at around 50:50. hence women constitute around half of the Indian population. Kerala fact file shows that for every 1000 men there 1058 women. in olden days,women wear confined to the four walls of the houses, looking after the household activities. they were involved mostly in non economic activities like cooking food for the family, looking after the kids, nursing the elder members of the family, etc. now there is a shift in the attitude, and their participation can be seen in all activities. the old saying goes, 'behind every successful man, there is a woman'. modern saying is different 'women is always around a successful man'. accordingly, women have been performing Exemplarily well in different spheres like politics, education, Administration and social work. Mrs.Sonia Gandhi, UPA chairperson, Sushama swaraj of Bjp are all examples. The Government of India has defined a women entrepreneurship as "an enterprise owned and controlled by a woman having a minimum financial interest of 51% of the capital and giving at least 51 % of the employment generated in the Enterprise to women".

women emancipation is a must for economic development of a country. in developed countries, there has been a phenomenal increase in the number of self employed women. the highlight number of self employed women is in Sweden followed by England, France and USA. however, the entry of women into business field is a recent phenomenon in India. in certain business sectors, women entrepreneurs are doing exceptionally well and excel their male counterpart. But the number of women entrepreneurs account for only about 10% of the total entrepreneurs in the country.
India is basically a male dominated country, even though our constitution gives equal rights to men and women. equality is only in black and white. in Hindu mythology, even though women are described as the embodiment of 'Shakti', the Supreme Power in practice, she is always treated as 'Abala', the week and dependent. ' Rakhi wearing' is symbolic- the sister to be taken care of by the brother. in all walks of life, she is considered as weak and dependent on men. now the concept is totally changing. she must come to the forefront in all activities. social, psychological and economic barriers must be broken and she must come forward to compete with the men folk.

The Industrial Policy Resolution 1991 highlights the need to provide special training programmes to develop women entrepreneurship. if more and more women become Income earners, they get more respect in the family as well as in the society. economic Independence give them a sense of security and higher level of self confidence. this will result in high standard of living. National and international conferences on Women entrepreneurs are vehemently promoting the idea of women owned Industries across the globe, and India in particular. all agree that more and more Women must come to the field of business.
