The gases move by diffusion from where they have a high concentration to where they have a low concentration: Oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air in the alveoli.

Alveoli are modified to increase the surface area each lung contains alveoli equal to surface area of 80m2 note that alveoli have a rich supply of blood
exchange of gasses:- it occurs in the alveoli. fresh air has a high concentration of oxygen and a very low concentration of carbon dioxide as a result, oxygen diffuses from alveolar air to blood present in capillaries around the alveoli. co2 diffuses from blood into the alveolar air
