NATO and Warsaw Pact

Explanation:

  • NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It was a military alliance established in 1949 by USA. Its headquarter is located in Brussels.  It was a system of collective defence in which all the member countries agreed to mutual defence in case of attack by any external party.
  • There were 12 founding members of this alliance.  At present there are 29 members. The twelve founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States
  • In response to NATO, Russia formed Warsaw Pact. It was formed on May 14, 1955. Warsaw pact was also a collective defence treaty. Initially USSR claimed that it was a defence alliance but in reality its purpose was to reinforce communist dominance in Eastern Europe.
  • Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria as members.
