What is Algae?

≈> Algae are chlorophyll bearing, simple, thalloid, autotrophic and large aquatic organisms.

Some of the main points about Algae are :-

  • In Algae root, stem, leaf and xylem are present but phloem is absent.
  • Reproductive organs are single and they dont produce embryo.
  • It is uni parental. Cell wall of the parent is not passing on progeny.
  • Asexual reproduction is by the production of different types of spores, the most common being the zoospores.
  • Sexual reproduction takes place through fusion of two gamates.
  • These gamates may be flagellated and similar in size or non-flagellated and similar in size. Such reproduction is called isogamous.
  • Fusion of two gamates dissimilar in size, as in species of udorine is called anisogamus.
  • Fusion between large non motile female gamate with smaller motile male gamate is called as Oogamous.

Uses of Algae :-

  • Chlorella is a unicellular Algae rich in proteins is used as food supplement even by space travellers.
  • Agar is one of the commercial products obtained from Gelidium are used to grow microbes in reparation of ice creams & jellies.
  • Porphyra, laminaria and sargassum are among the 70 species of marine Algae used as food.
  • Iodine & bromine are extracted from marine algae.

Types of Algae :

There are 3 types:-

  • Chlorophyceae. [Green Algae]
  • Phaeophyceae. [Brown Algae]
  • Rhodophycea. [Red Algae]
