Hi friend,
A thermit reaction is basically iron oxide ( rust ) reacting with aluminium to produce melten iron. The reaction is initiated by the heat from burning magnesium ribbon which is placed in the iron oxide / aluminium mixture , this the fuse ! .
This reaction is highly exothermic and produce molten metal about 3,000 ° C .....i hope it helps you
