The chloralkali process (also chlor-alkali and chlor alkali) is an industrialprocess for the electrolysis of sodium chloride. It is the technology used to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide (lye/caustic soda), which are commodity chemicals required by industry.

Answer:

Electrolysis of Brine

When electricity is passed through aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) also known as brine solution, it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This process is called cholr-alkali process because of products formed chlor from chlorine and alkali from sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is given at anode and hydrogen at cathode, sodium hydroxide near cathode.
