This expression ‘Chuck hit a new low’ means Chuck became sadder after the initial happiness of being released from the hospital. The reason was at hospital he was not so sad as the presence of other injured people constantly reminded him he was not the only suffering from invalidity. However, at home he had nothing to do but to lie on bed staring incessantly at the ceiling or windows. This depressed him. Loneliness at home after Marcy went to work was very depressing.
Each day, he could just hear the gate slamming twice a day and could continuously stare at the ceiling and then at the Duke.
