Friction is caused by the area of contact between any two surfaces , and then by which cold welded bonds are formed which make the objects lose their energy and momentum and make the relative motion stop between the objects. A lubricant smoothens the surfaces and reduces the cold welded bonds and thus reducing the coefficient of friction between the surfcaes.
