Just like any other living thing, soil is not actually dead. It's gives life to plants due to it's unique composition of minerals which work in a specific way to work properly.

Just like when a farmer prepares soil, every soil has a life, and if it is used too much or not taken care of properly, it can experience a mineral imbalance also known as soil infertility.

This usually means that the soil would not be able to bear much fruit if it's chemical composition is imbalanced. That is why every year farmers give their land some 'breathing space' for a month or two before starting the next cultivation!

All plants require certain nutrients like Potassium, Nitrogen and phosphorus for the proper growth and functioning of plant.
If the farmer continues the plantation of crop continously then the following things may happen:.
1.crops consumes lot of nutrients from the soil and it effects soil fertility.
2. It also affects yield and quality of soil.
So nutrients once consumed by plants must be replenished before next cultivation of crops. So to prevent this, usually farmer will grow leguminous crop in between two cereals which is called as rotation of crops.

For example corn( maize) and soybean ( leguminous) .
Rotation of crop helps in enrichment of soil with essential nutrients.
Nowadays farmers are following, mixed or multiple cropping is done.
