The lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air we breathe and the blood. ... Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli deep in the lungs. Breathing air in (inhalation) requires muscular effort. Air is warmed, humidified, and cleaned by the nose and lungs.

This astonishing process is a personal air treatment system. When we breathe through our nose, the air in the environment passes through the nostrils into an open area called the 'nasal cavity' and three sinuses(superior, medial, and inferior) before entering the lungs.
This whole pathway is lined with a thin layer mucous membrane(sticky) that traps dust, mold, pollen, and other environmental contaminants. It also contains tiny hairs called cilia through which mucous sweeps from the nasal cavity towards the posterior region of our throat. All the dust particle sticks to it .
LUNGS are such pair of organs that helps in inhalation and exhalation of air we breathe. The major cause is diaphragm as it pushes the abdominal elements downwards when we inhale and provides maximum space creating vaccum and the air is sucked in the alveoli where gaseous exchange takes place through passive diffusion.
