Na has 1 electrons in its outermost shell.
so it has to lose either one electron or gain 7 electrons in order to become chemically stable.
but it's easier to lose one electron.
valency is defined as the no. of electrons lost , gained or shared in order to become chemically stable
so its valency is 1 , n hence it is monovalent.

sodium  has 1 electron in its outermost shell.therfore it has to lose either one electron or gain 7 electrons in order to become chemically stable and gain octet.but it's easier to lose one electron.so it loses it and valency is the amt of electons lost, gained or shared so that's its valency.
