Example--- 2,4,8,16,32.......
here the next term is double of preceding...

A geometric progression(GP) is given by a, ar, ar2, ar3, ...
where a = the first term , r = the common ratio.
A very easy way to just understand this is that every other term is multiplied a common term. Making the division of two consecutive terms equal to that common term.
