I will put it in 2 parts. Before & After 1983. I know very little about pre 1983 and team India wasn't good enough to compete with other teams, for a very long time. I don't know about other great Indian players but Gavaskar's emergence had a very positive impact on our results. Then Kapil Dev added great variety to Indian team, with his bowling & batting exploits, as India's first major fast bowler. He was highly responsible for team India's triumph in the W.C. 1983, which was a great team effort but totally unexpected. Before 1983 edition, India had won couple of matches in previous 2 editions in 1975 & 1979. Triumph in 1983 W.C. changed outlook of Indian cricket in particular & Asian cricket in general. First time in 15 years, the W.C. moved out of England, the home of cricket, to the Sub Continent, where India & Pakistan co-hosted 1987 WC tournament. It is yet to go back to the English shores. 1989 saw Tendulkar's debut against Pakistan and things haven't been same ever since. He carried team India on his shoulders for a long time. Since the emergence of Ganguly & Dravid in 1996, Sehwag & Laxman in 98-99, Tendulkar took back seat and let these stalwarts share his workload. Indian diaspora helped make team India as the most favorite touring team around the world. With great set of batsmen, Kumble, Srinath, Prasad & later Harbhajan in the team, team India started winning abroad, along with strong show at home. Though Australia dominated World Cups, other strong teams, i.e. W.I., England & Pakistan declined and team India took on Australia, with S.A., vied for the top honors. Sri Lanka also emerged as a strong team but India was the most improved team since 1990 and had the best record against the mighty Aussies, during their reign all around the world. India performed reasonably well in 1999, 2003 World Cups, won by Australia. They lost early in the 2007 W.C. but went on to win their 2nd crown in 2011 and peaked with that win, with world no.1 status in the Tests as well. Since 2011 W.C. win team India has steadily declined, as they were hammered in England & Australia, though they went to toe to nail with S.A. in S.A. but now they are under going rebuilding process, with only Tendulkar, Sehwag & Zaheer Khan surviving from the numero uno teams. They have big series lined up in the coming 3-4 months, which will show their progress and maybe we will see the end of our grand master Tendulkar's long innings of nearly 25 years at the helm. Wish team all the best against Eng & Aus and good luck without their mainstay Sachin Tendulkar, when it happens and hope Kohli and others would come of age, to carry the strong Indian batting traditions. Yadav, Dinda & Aaron kind of fast bowlers holding fort for Zaheer and company in the coming years, all the best..

The impact of cricket can be only seen in countries which were owned by Britishers. In our country India cricket was promoted by rich people who were in touch with the Britishers, or who were westernized. The local elites who were playing cricket promoted it as the children and other people who wanted to copy the style of local elites.
