Hi there!

Projective Tests are Psychological Tests in which words, images, situations, etc (Stimulus) are presented to a person and the response analyzed for UNCONSCIOUS expression of Elements of Personality(simply meaning-Nature) that they reveal.

Projection means to have something within and express "ditto" or about same OUTSIDE. Let's say, you were feeling ANGRY. Now, you should know that , WHATEVER you experience you have, the SEAT of experience is within you.

So, where would you experience that ANGER? Within You. It doesn't matter who Idiot, triggered it.

Now, if you SMACK your friend because you were feeling ANGRY before, then that is PROJECTION.
Another example is ofcourse the Projector.
There is beautiful rays coming from the Projector. It shows whatever is inside the Laptop, isn't it? And that "whatever" is transferred to the Projector and shown in the screen.

Now, consider the same for a Human Being. Whatever is within you at a moment, you show it on the screen. Now, that screen can be ANY action Outside in the world ,like smacking your friend.

You might say, then every action is PROJECTIVE action. No! Not everyone SMACK their friend when one feels angry, or express what emotion they have within.

They mostly keep it to themselves. Also, often we don't know what we are feeling within, why and what to do with it.

Now, projective tests asks for this PROJECTION of what is within with the help of certain STIMULUS like ambiguous pictures, etc.

What a person is or what one experiences within can be extremely hard sometimes. Projective Tests really helps in that case.

For assessing Psychopathology, it is extremely useful. Often the people with Mental Disorder, do not cooperate and the Doctors are not able to truly understand the problem. If they can't understand the problem then how can they solve it.

Projective Tests have their function in this way.

Hope it make sense!
