Protochordate, any member of either of two invertebrate subphyla of the phylum Chordata: the Tunicata (sea squirts, salps, etc.) and the Cephalochordata (amphioxus).

These animals are bilateral symmetrical, triploblastic and have ceolem. They have a long rod like support structure called notochord that runs along the back of animals separating nervous tissue from the gut. They may not have a proper notocord present in all stages in their lives and they are marine animals. e.g. Balanoglossus , Herdmania etc.
