One of the major achievements of Bairam Khan was the defeat of Hemu and the Afghan forces in the second battle of Panipat in 1556 CE. Hemu was the chief minister and general of Afghan ruler Adil Shah. He was posing a serious threat to the mughal empire. He had seized control over Delhi and Ajmer after defeating the Mughal forces . He when declared himself as an independent ruler assuming the title of Hema Chandra Vikramaditya .

Bairam Khan did not give him much time to consolidate his position and engaged him in an early fight. In November 1556, the Mughal forces and hemu's army met at Panipat. The second battle of Panipat ended in Hemu's defeat and death. With this battle, Afghan power was crashed and the threat to the Mughal Empire was reduced
