Kidneys play an important role not only by filtering the blood and getting rid of waste products, but also by balancing the salt levels in the body, controlling blood pressure, and stimulating i.e., increasing the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood t by the production of red blood cells (RBCs).

A person can lead a normal life with one kidney but when both of them stops functioning, it can prove fatal means it lead to death of a person whose both kidneys failed if no treatment is provided. An artificial kidney or a dialyser is a machine used to filter the blood of a patient whose kidneys are damaged. This process is called dialysis.

Refer the diagram in the attachment for better understanding.✅

♓Don't confuse between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

  • Hemodialysis:- It removes waste products and water from the blood with the help of a machine and a filter, In this way the blood is filtered. Therefore, this process is known as hemodialysis.

  • peritoneal dialysis:- It removes waste products in our body with the help of a fluid known as dialysate. Hence, this process is known as peritoneal dialysis.

✴️So there are two types of dialysis, that is hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. By both ways dialysis we can filter the blood of a patient whose both kidneys are damaged or if they stop functioning.
