Sir Charles Wood, in  1854 has sent a despatch to lord dalhousie the Governor general of India, had an important effect on spreading English learning and female education in India. His important recommendation was

1) Vernacular language at primary level, anglo- vernacular  at high scool  and English at college level

2)Vocational and women's education should be supported by government -  many women's school were opened in provinces.

3) Indian natives should given training in the mother tongue.

4)Provision was made for a systematic method of education from primary level to the university level.

5) Affiliated private schools should be given grant in aid.
