The Biblical allusion used in the poem is: ‘I would have him prodigal’. The father wishes that his son should return to him like the Prodigal son.
The parable of Prodigal Son was narrated by Jesus in the Gospel of St. Luke. In this parable Jesus teaches how a father’s younger son goes away from him, taking his share of inheritance. Living away from his father he loses everything and his life becomes miserable. He realizes his folly and decides to return; he is welcomed warmly by his father. Jesus narrated the parable to teach the mysteries of Kingdom of God.
In the poem the father wishes his son to behave like the son in the parable.
