we have to explain that BF₃ reacts with F¯ to give BF₄¯, but AlF₃ reacts with F¯ to give AlF₆³¯.

explanation : configuration of B = 1s², 2s², 2p¹

configuration of Al = 1s², 2s², 2p⁶ , 3s², 3p¹ , 3d⁰

here you see from configuration it is clear that boron doesn't have vacant d - orbital but Aluminium do have. due to this reason, Al atom has coordination number 6 while B atom has CN 4.

Hence due to non availability of d - orbitals in configuration of B atom, it forms BF₄¯ instead of BF₆³¯ but Al forms AlF₆³¯.
