As microorganisms oxidize carbon for energy, oxygen is used up and carbon dioxide is produced. ... Although the atmosphere is 21% oxygen, aerobic microbes can survive at concentrations as low as 5%. Oxygen concentrations greater than 10% are considered optimal for maintaining aerobic composting

Composition of the Atmosphere

● The atmosphere is made up of layers of colourless, odourless and tasteless gases.

● Air is a mixture of gases, water vapour, dust particles and smoke .

● The atmosphere is composed mainly of nitrogen and oxygen.

● Pure and dry air mainly contain nitrogen ( 78 percent ) and oxygen ( 21 percent ).

● Up to a height of about 8 km, the composition of clean and dry air is fairly uniform.

● Other gases like argon, carbon dioxide, neon, ozone hydrogen, helium, methane, etc., are found in the atmosphere in small quantities .

● Besides these gases, water vapour, dust particles, smoke, salt, etc., are also present in the atmosphere.

● Oxygen is comparatively heavier than other gases. As such, it is confined to the lower layers of the atmosphere. This is the reason that the climbers are required to carry oxygen cylinders with them.

● All living organisms need oxygen to breathe.

● Nitrogen helps in the growth of living organisms. Plants use carbon dioxide to prepare food through photosynthesis. It also absorb the heat radiated by the earth and keep the planet warm.

● Water vapour and dust particles are also confined to the lower layer of the atmosphere.

● The amount of water vapour and dust particles are vary from place to place and from time to time.
