When something expands, or bursts outward, it is known as expansion. For example, water on freezing expands, and hence cracks the glass bottle it is contained in.
An example of contraction is making of a bimetallic strip. When a rivet is heated, it expands and is put in a hole slighly bigger than its diameter. When it cools, it contracts and thus holds the strips firmly in place.
