The rebellious and revolutionary Crimes Act introduced in 1919, was popularly known as Rowlatt Act.

It was named after the president of Rowlatt committee Sir Sidney Rowlatt.

The Act was also known as Black Act as it had authorized the British government to imprison any suspected person for terrorism for up to two years without any trial.

This authority was given to government to deal with possible revolutionary activities. Hence, it was opposed by People of India.
