Hail is a form of solid precipitation.
It is distinct from ice pellets, though the two are often confused.
It consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, each of which is called a hailstone.
Hailstones velocity is dependent on the size of the stone, friction with air it is falling though, collisions with raindrops of other hailstones, and melting as the stones fall through a warmer atmosphere....
