Buddhist teacher means a practitioner who traveled some territory ahead of students. That’s why he is called “spiritual guide”. In other words, he knows methods and principles, and so he can teach others.

Of course teachers are different, just like professors in a college are different. Some teachers mostly teach intellectual doctrines, because it seems important for them. Some teachers mostly teach meditation. Some teachers are good in meditation, but not so good in some fields of doctrine, etc.

Therefore, the main role of a Buddhist teacher is to provide people with methodsand principles, so that students could practice for themselves. A teacher is not necessarily able to give deep guidance in daily life problems. A teacher is not necessarily awakened.

A teacher is not necessarily looks like your ideal of personality. For example, some people want to see a teacher as someone solemn and always smiling, embodying love and veneration. But that wish to have an ideally looking teacher is just an attachment to our ideas.

If a teacher gives good methods and principles, it’s probably a good teacher.

Of course if one day you meet a teacher with whom you feel a special “karmic link”, so his teaching style suits you very well, that may be very useful. Strong inspiration and really qualified guidance can make our practice very powerful.

But in any case our practice is our practice, so whatever teachers we have now, we should pracice diligently, according to the deepest intention of our heart.
