According to this law the allele of two different genes get sorted into gametes independently of one another,in other words the allele that a hamare receives for one gene does not influence the allele received for another gene .Therefore it is called independent assortment

"""Law of independent assortment"" states that “alleles of different ""genes are inherited"" independently of one another”.

This can be easily understood using a dihybrid cross.

Two homozygous pea plants are chosen such that one is homozygous dominant and produces smooth yellow seeds and the other is homozygous recessive and produces wrinkled green seeds.

When both these plants are crossed, all the plants in the first filial generation produce smooth yellow seeds.

When the offsprings in the ""first filial generation"" are inter-crossed, all possible varieties such as smooth yellow, smooth green, wrinkled yellow, and wrinkled green are produced in the ratio of ""9:3:3:1"".

As these genes are unlinked, they are inherited independently and thus result in sixteen possible combinations as illustrated in the ""punnet square"".
