Answer:

Soil types

  • Clay soils are heavy, high in nutrients, wet and cold in winter and baked dry in summer.
  • Sandy soils are light, dry, warm, low in nutrients and often acidic.
  • Silt soils are fertile, light but moisture-retentive, and easily compacted.
  • Loams are mixtures of clay, sand and silt that avoid the extremes of each

Alluvial soil:- (i) It contains various proportions of sand , silt and clay.

(ii) The soil particles appear somewhat bigger in size as we go inward from the river.

(iii) The soil is very fertile.

(iv) Mostly it contains adequate proportion of potash, phosphoric acid and lime .

Black soil:- (i) They are made of extremely fine i.e. clayey material.

(ii) They are well known for holding moisture.

(iii) They are rich in soil nutrients like calcium carbonate, magnesium , potash and lime .

(iv) They are poor in phosphoric contents.

Red and yellow soil:- (i) These soils develop a reddish colour due to diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks .

(ii) It looks yellow when it occurs in a hydrated form .

Laterite soil :- ( i) Humus content of the soil is very low.

( ii) They are suitable for crop cultivation with adequate doses of manure and fertilisers .

( iii) They develop in areas of high temperature and rainfall

Arid soil: - ( i) They range from red to brown in colour.

( iii) They are sandy in texture and saline in nature .

( iv) The salt content is very high in some areas and common salt is obtained from there .

( v) The lower horizons of the soil are occupied by Kankar because of the increasing calcium contents downward.

Forest soil :- ( i)The soil texture varies according to the mountain environment where they are formed .

( ii) They are loamy and silty in valley sides and coarse grained in the upper slopes.

( iii) These soils become acidic with low humus content in the snow covered areas of Himalayas.
