Here in the chapter the narrator perception about conductor was that, he thinks about the morality of conductor. He compared conductor with lift-man who lost his patience at very short talk. He lost his peace of mind.
The conductor on the other hand was very upright morally. Conductor was very sensible. Whenever he does a mistake, he realize that he should apologize.
Lift-man takes things very personally and get angry and breaks the law.
He does very ill mannered behavior with people.
Lift-man behave inappropriately whereas conductor was a wise man and keep his mind peace and also ensure that he does not break the law.
