In gram-negative bacteria, plasmid-mediated resistance genes produce proteins that can bind to DNA gyrase, protecting it from the action ofquinolones. Finally, mutations at key sites in DNA gyrase or topoisomerase IV can decrease their binding affinity toquinolones, decreasing the drugs' effectiveness.
