Answer:

Hydrogenation reaction is used for the preparation of ethane from  chloroethane.

Wurtz reaction is used for the preparation n-butane from chloroethane.

Explanation:

  • When chloroethane reacts with alc. KOH , the dehalogenation takes place with the formation of ethylene, The formed ethylene further undergoes the hydrogenation in presence of Nickel catalyst.

         CH₃CH₂Cl  \underrightarrow{alc.KOH}    CH₂=CH₂    $$\underrightarrow{H_{2},Ni}$$    CH₃-CH₃

  • Wurtz reaction is used to produce higher alkane from lower alkane.  This reaction occurs in the presence of Na metal as well as dry ether. The two moles of alkyl halide react with sodium metal and give a higher alkane and two moles of sodium chloride. Here, two moles of chloroethane react to form n-butane.

         2CH₃CH₂Cl   \underrightarrow{Na, dry \; ether}  CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃   +  2NaCl
