Scalar chain is the formal line of authority which moves from highest to lowest rank in a straight line. It is not always a bearer of good news. For example, The CEO of company needs to reduce the number of employees in his/her company. This news is conveyed to a manager and then to an employee supervisor and the to the employee who will be fired.

The formal lines of authority from highest to lowest ranks are known as scalar chain.

According to Fayol Organisation should have a chain of authority and communication that runs from top to bottom and should be followed by managers and subordinates.

For example, in an organization there are employees A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, at various posts. If employee ‘C’ has to communicate with employee ‘G’ using the scalar chain, the route should be like C-B-A-F-G. Thus there will be four steps for the information to reach from employee ‘C’ to the employee ‘G’.
