Electrolysis is the process of breaking up of an electrolyte chemically on passing electric current through it.
It consists of two electrods which are conducting. The positively charged electrode is called anode and negatively charged electrode is called cathode.

When electric current is passed through an electrolyte , it breaks up into positively and negatively charged particles called ions.
Positively charged ion is called cation and negatively charged ions are called anions. Cations get attracted to cathode and anions get attracted to anode.
