The sole purpose of the special provisions that were introduced for the North-Eastern parts of India was to protect and preserve the economic and cultural interests of the tribal people as well as maintain their autonomy.
According to The Government of India Act, 1919, the North-Eastern parts of India were recognized as backward and underprivileged areas.
They have a history of being governed by different administrative norms and hence it affected the freedom and power of the people residing there. Therefore, autonomous districts came into existence in Assam to preserve their rights.
