Answer:

refraction is the change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another or from a gradual change in the medium. Refraction of light is the most commonly observed phenomenon, but other waves such as sound waves and water waves also experience refraction

QUESTION : EXPLAIN THE REFRACTION OF LIGHT .

Answer:

REFRACTION :

When Light passes from one transparent Medium to another , it changes its speed and direction ( or bends ) . This bending of light is called REFRACTION . But , when the light falls perpendicular o the surface of tje medium , it does not change its Direction .

REFRACTION IN DIFFERENT MEDIUMS :

  • WHen light passes from air into water or glass , it bends towards the Normal . THE ANGLE OF INCIDENCE IS GREATER THAN THE ANGLE OF REFRACTION .

  • When light passes from water or glass into air , it bends away from the normal . THE ANGLE OF REFRACTION IS GREATER THAN THE ANGLE OF INCIDENCE .

LAWS OF REFRACTION :

THERE ARE TWO LAWS OF REFRACTION :•

  1. The incident ray , the refracted ray and the normal at the point of incidence , all lie in the same plane .
  2. The ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to its speed in another medium is always constant .

IMPORTANT TERMS :

WE CAN UNDERSTAND THE TERM REFRACTION WITH THE HELP OF THE FOLLOWING TERMS :•

INCIDENT RAY : The ray of light that travels in one medium and falls on the surface of the second medium .

REFRACTED RAY : The ray of light that changes its direction in the second medium .

NORMAL : An imaginary line , drawn perpendicularly on the surface of the medium at the point where the incident ray falls ( point of incidence ) .

ANGLE OF INCIDENCE : The angle between the normal and the incident ray . It is denoted by " i " .

ANGLE OF REFRACTION : The angle between the normal and the refracted ray . It is denoted by " r " .
