Explain the structure of the Supreme Court of India. Discuss its appellate

Structure of the supreme court:

  • The supreme court consists of 30 judges and one chief justice. These are regular judges and their number is fixed.

Appellate jurisdition:

  • The supreme court is the highest court of appeal. It has a very vast appellate jurisdiction. It can hear cases of appeals from high court, civil court, criminal court. It can change decision or reduced sentence passed by the lower courts.

Advisory jurisdiction:

  • The president may seek supreme court opinion or advice on a question of law or fact which is of public importance in the opinion of president.
  • The supreme court may give its opinion but the opinion of supreme court is not binding on the president that means president is free to accept or not.
